Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are custom-crafted oral prosthetics used to repair damaged or missing teeth.

Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped covering that envelopes the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line. You might benefit from a crown if you develop a large cavity or severely damage a tooth. Once placed, a crown restores your affected tooth to its near-original shape, size, and condition.

Bridges

A fixed dental bridge is an oral prosthetic used to fill a gap in your smile. There are several types of crowns, but all contain a false tooth (pontic) and a supportive framework.

Dr. Sierra attaches the framework to your healthy teeth on either side of the space. In addition to restoring your smile, a bridge stops gum recession and prevents your other teeth from moving out of place.

Does getting a crown or bridge take more than one appointment?

Getting a crown or bridge usually requires two separate appointments.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Sierra conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals for treatment. Afterward, he takes a series of digital X-rays to look for signs of tooth decay or gum disease.

Next, Dr. Sierra prepares your mouth to receive the prosthetic. If you’re getting a crown, he carefully shaves down the enamel on the top and sides of your tooth. If you’re getting a bridge, he shaves down the enamel on your two healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

After preparing your teeth, Dr. Sierra takes a series of impressions using dental putty. He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your crown or bridge. About a week later, you return to Boca Mission Bay Dentistry.

During your second appointment, Dr. Sierra bonds your crown or bridge in place, restoring your smile to a healthy, vibrant condition.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Crowns and bridges usually last between 10-15 years. It’s possible to extend their lifespan, though, if you practice good oral hygiene and avoid bad habits. Dr. Sierra recommends brushing and flossing regularly and visiting Boca Mission Bay Dentistry every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

To prevent chips, cracks, or other damage, wear a mouthguard when playing sports and avoid biting your fingernails. You should also avoid chewing on hard candy, popcorn kernels, or ice cubes. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw while sleeping, you might want to consider wearing a night guard.
